Fay Cochran was the front counter employee for Sandpiper Air at Tom Nevers Field on Nantucket. She was played by Rebecca Schull.

Bio[]

Fay Evelyn Schlob Dumbly DeVay Cochran was Joe's only employee besides Brian. She is a former flight attendant who once lived in Syracuse and now handles the ticket counter, baggage check and flight announcements for Sandpiper Air.

In Gone But Not Faygotten, Fay states that she was born in 1932 or 1933 in Syracuse, New York and lived in a two-story rowhome. As a teenager, Fay served sodas at Woolworth's, and during World War II, she worked in the U.S.O. and danced with soldiers, possibly meeting her first husband while she was in the army. He was a boxer, and she was his corner man. She didn't mind the language, but hated the spitting. He later died after getting hit by a truck.

Fay later played drums in a U.S.O. all-girls band in Korea during the 1950s. She possibly met her second husband during this time as well. After the war, she took in boarders in her home, once getting arrested in 1966 for decking a guy during an anti-war rally. She also once lived in Manhattan. She later became a stewardess and has several stories from her life from this time, such as once being stranded in Butte, Montana with no money or a change of clothes and once having to kick down landing gear on a flight. Later on, when the airline was forcing her to retire, she met Joe Hackett on Flight 211 to Honolulu, and they bonded, later helping to create Sandpiper Air in 1988 (Stew in a Stew).

Fay went on to be married three times, all with men who had the first name George, and who have all died. She half-jokes of a curse in which, if she marries a man named George, he dies. She is a generally sweet and motherly woman, though slightly batty, who looks after the younger members of her circle as her own children, with the possible exception of Roy Biggins, whom she often has little patience due to his generally contemptible behavior. She can, however, be sweetly manipulative.
